Digital implant planning means mapping out your treatment on a 3D model of your jaw before any surgery happens. At Coastal Dental Implants in Alexandra Headland, we take the scans on site, often at your first consultation, and use computer-guided planning to position each implant precisely. For you, that can mean fewer appointments early on, a clearer picture of your options, and often less invasive surgery.
Digital implant planning is the use of 3D imaging and computer software to plan dental implant treatment before any surgery. A scan of your jaw is turned into a detailed model, which lets the dentist see the bone, nerves and the most suitable implant positions in advance, rather than working it out during the procedure.
Dr Peter Jorgensen has used and taught digital implant planning for several years, including lecturing other dentists on the technique. The same approach guides treatment from single implants right through to full arch cases.
The 3D scans needed for planning are done at our Alexandra Headland rooms, so you are not sent elsewhere for imaging. In many cases we can complete the scan at your consultation, which means you get answers about your suitability early, rather than after several review appointments. Call the team on 07 5443 3045 to book.
Digital planning is useful even if you still have the teeth that are causing trouble. Scanning before anything is removed lets us check whether implants will suit you and plan the timing, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you. It also helps us judge whether a temporary tooth might be possible on the day of surgery, in suitable cases.
We start with a consultation and a 3D scan on site. The scan becomes the model we plan from.
Using computer-guided planning, we map the position of each implant against your bone and bite, and work out the most predictable approach for your situation.
The plan guides the surgery itself, so the implant goes where it was planned, which is the whole point of mapping it first.
Once the implants have bonded with the bone, the crown, bridge or denture is fitted in our rooms.
Dental implant treatment is surgery, and as with any surgical or invasive procedure, there are risks, such as infection, slow healing or, in rare cases, implant failure. Planning helps us prepare, but it does not remove every risk. We explain the risks relevant to your situation before any treatment, and you are always welcome to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
Yes, planning uses a 3D scan of your jaw rather than a standard flat X-ray. It shows the bone, nerves and sinuses in three dimensions, which is what lets us plan implant positions accurately. You’ve got options here. We can take the scan at our Alexandra Headland rooms, often at your first consultation, or if you’ve already had a recent 3D scan done elsewhere, we can work from that instead.
Planning the implant position on a 3D model before surgery, then following that plan, helps place the implant where it was intended. It also lets the dentist work around nerves and sinuses that a flat X-ray would not show clearly. Every case is different, and we explain what the planning means for your specific situation.
It often can. Because the surgery is mapped out in advance, the procedure can sometimes be smaller and more direct than working it out during the operation. Whether that applies to you depends on your bone and the treatment planned, which we assess from your scan.
In many cases, yes. Having the scan on site means we can often complete it at your consultation and discuss your suitability the same day, rather than booking you back for separate imaging. We will let you know when you call whether anything needs to be arranged beforehand.
Yes. Scanning while your natural teeth are still in place lets us check whether implants will suit you and plan the timing of any extractions and placement. It also helps us judge whether a temporary tooth might be possible at the time of surgery, in suitable cases.
