Denture Implants on the Sunshine Coast

Stop your dentures slipping. A few implants can hold a new or existing denture firmly in place.

If your dentures move when you eat, click when you talk, or just never feel secure, denture implants can change that. At Coastal Dental Implants in Alexandra Headland, we use a small number of implants to hold a new or existing denture in place, so it stays seated while you chew and speak. It is a common, well-understood treatment, and we plan and fit it here on the Sunshine Coast.

How denture implants work

Denture implants use the same titanium posts as other dental implants. Once placed in the jaw and bonded with the bone, they give your denture something solid to grip, instead of relying on suction, paste or the shape of your gums. Your denture either clips onto the implants and lifts out for cleaning, or it is held by a custom titanium bar for an even firmer fit.

Lower dentures: often just two implants

Lower dentures are usually the hardest to keep in place, because there is less ridge for them to grip and the tongue tends to dislodge them. Two implants are often enough to stabilise a lower denture, so it stays seated when you eat and talk, but still lifts out for cleaning.

Upper dentures: a smaller, firmer plate

Upper dentures can use implants too. We often use a precision bar, custom-designed and milled in titanium, which the denture fits onto for a strong, well-seated result that can feel close to your own teeth. Because the implants do the holding, the plate can be made smaller, without covering as much of the roof of your mouth, which many patients find more comfortable and better for taste.

What the process looks like

Step 1: Consultation and 3D scan

We start with a consultation and a 3D scan at our Alexandra Headland rooms, to check your jawbone and plan where the implants go. Call the team on 07 5443 3045 to arrange it.

Step 2: Written quote, no pressure

You get a written quote covering each stage, with flexible payment plans available. There is no pressure to decide on the day.

Step 3: Placing the implants

We place the implants under local anaesthetic, with sedation available. A lower denture often needs only two implants, while an upper or a firmer, bar-supported fit may use more.

Step 4: Fitting your denture

After the implants have bonded with the bone, usually a few months, we connect your new or existing denture so it sits firmly. We check the fit and your bite before you leave.

Can my existing dentures be used?

In many cases, yes. If your current denture is in good condition, it can sometimes be adapted to clip onto implants rather than being replaced. Whether that works depends on the denture’s age, fit and material, so we check it at your consultation before recommending a new plate or keeping the one you have.

What denture implants cost

The cost depends on how many implants you need and whether you keep your current denture or have a new one made, so we quote each case individually rather than publishing a price. After your consultation and scan, you receive a written quote setting out each stage, and flexible payment plans are available.

Before you go ahead

Placing denture implants is surgery, and as with any surgical or invasive procedure there are risks, such as infection, slow healing or, in rare cases, implant failure. We explain the risks relevant to your situation before any treatment, and you are always welcome to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many implants do I need for an implant-retained denture?

It depends on the jaw and the denture. A lower denture can often be stabilised with two implants, while an upper denture or a firmer, bar-supported fit may use more. We measure your jawbone with a 3D scan and recommend the number that will hold your denture securely for your situation.

That is exactly what it is designed to do. By anchoring the denture to implants in the jaw, it stays seated when you chew, talk and laugh, rather than lifting or moving. Most patients find they can eat a wider range of foods and feel more secure than with a conventional denture.

Usually, yes. Many implant-retained dentures clip onto the implants and lift out for cleaning, which keeps day-to-day hygiene simple. Some patients choose a fixed, bar-supported option instead. We talk through both at your consultation so you can pick what suits your routine.

The implants are placed under local anaesthetic, and sedation is available, so the procedure is comfortable. Expect some soreness or swelling for a day or two afterwards, usually managed with ordinary pain relief. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks, including infection or slow healing, and we go through these with you beforehand.

Plan on a few months from start to finish. After the implants are placed, they need time to bond with the bone before your denture is connected. Timeframes vary between patients depending on healing and whether any other treatment is needed, and we give you a realistic schedule at your consultation.

No. We plan, place and fit implant-retained dentures at our Alexandra Headland clinic, including the scans, so Sunshine Coast patients can have it done locally without the drive to Brisbane.
